A clean and contemporary collection from Charlie may for AW14; bias cuts, skater skirts, high roll-necks and high-waisted cropped trousers. Wool and leather are key fabrics, with a pair of biker trousers featuring as a stand-out piece. A sheen finish is applied across the collection through use of fabric, although it isn’t clear exactly which fabric is used. In the case of the cropped trousers and sleeveless shift dress I’m tempted to say satin but in the case of the skater skirts it would seem to be a layered gauze effect? Perhaps we’ll never know. Either way, the effect adds another dimension to the black, navy and cream collection, almost as if it were an extra colour.

Similarly the ribbing on the knitwear adds a textural and decorative element, in absence of any form of print. With collections this season having been so heavy in this area, Charlie May’s focus on shapes and small details goes against the trend, providing an alternative to that look. Accessories are minimal and come in the form of zipped flat clutches and riding caps.
