GEORGE STYLER. SS15

Last season George Styler made quite an impression at the Ones To Watch show, so I was excited to see how this emerging designer would develop for SS15. Once again we saw inspirations from a foreign place and perhaps even a foreign time with headdresses, wide shoulders and heavily jewelled embellishments that referenced ancient Egypt.

Styler’s ‘Cleopatras’ wore crocheted mini-dresses in bright pinks, yellows, oranges and deep purples, further decorated with fringing and crochet flowers.  Spikes also featured; covering a pair of turquoise men’s jeans and appearing on shoes to add extra grit to the looks.

Some urban attitude appeared as an unexpected twist to the collection, in the form of sleeveless sports jackets (cropped for les femmes) and a basketball vest and shorts combo complete with large elephant graphic.  The looks were finished with over-sized accessories that mirrored those crowning the models.

On the whole the collection felt like a natural progression for Styler, maintaining the vibrancy and other-worldliness of his debut. On the other hand, the heavy focus on crochet meant that, by default, the collection lacked some of the bold structure that made the AW14 collection so incredibly striking. More of those power shoulders please!
