Flamboyant designer Julien Macdonald launched his first eyewear collection at Vision Express’s Oxford Street East store last night. In keeping with Macdonald’s unashamedly glitzy aesthetic – he has famously created stage costumes for the likes of Kylie, Beyonce and Madonna – the event was a suitably glamorous affair. DJ Smokin’ Jo was on hand to provide the soundtrack, while bespectacled guests including Jaime Winstone and Brian Friedman nibbled glitter-covered macarons and sipped champagne.

‘Designers are always looking for a new part of the body to make fashionable,’ Macdonald said of his decision to collaboration with the high street optometrists. ‘I wanted to create trend-setting eyewear.’ And for those seeking a sprinkle of the Macdonald magic, the 17-piece womens’ collection doesn’t disappoint. A pair of tortoiseshell cats’-eye frames have an understated vintage appeal, but for the most part, designs are heavily embellished with diamante, swirls of coloured crystals and tiny golden snakes – Macdonald’s signature motif – winding round the edges. Red-carpet worthy indeed.

The collection launches at Vision Express stores nationwide on 3rd December 2014.
